The dissertation deals with the First Jewish War (66-73/4) and at the same time examines the fall of the Jerusalem Temple and its consequences for Christianity and Judaism from Late Antiquity to Early Modern Age. In the dissertation we have focused on a passage from the Jewish War (Josephus, Jewish War, 6. 236-270), which describes how a Roman soldier throws a torch into the Jerusalem sanctuary and causes a fire. The Roman destruction of the Jerusalem Temple marked the final victory of the Romans in the war for Jerusalem in 70 AD. Rome celebrated the triumph and erected many beautiful monuments to commemorate the victory over the Jews. The fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD had a great impact on Judaism and the synagogue became an important institution in Jewish society. The capture of Jerusalem in 70 also had an impact on Christianity, in literature.
