The medium we use for communication has a great influence on the way, structure and speed of interactions; in addition, it also affects the quality and quantity of transmitted messages. A landline phone has already seemingly reduced the world, as it has enabled communication with geographically distant people, with the progress of the mobile and later the smartphone, communication has accelerated and became even more accessible. Today, mobile phone communication is a necessity; for the vast majority it represents an important part of interactions. In my dissertation, I am interested in how the differences in the use of a smartphone and its functions between the older generation are reflected. These were studied on the basis of gender, previous experience with technology, geographical distances with close ones, lifestyle and education. In the empirical part of the thesis, I answered the research questions with the help of data collected through interviews. The analysis of the results shows, that the use of a smartphone is complex and we must take into account all of the above factors in the interpretation, as the use of functions is not unambiguous or simple.
