Abstract

Title:Medieval swords from the area of modern-day Slovenia
Abstract:
This thesis covers the medieval swords, primarily of the period from the 11. to 15. century, discovered in the geographic area of modern-day Slovenia. The vast majority of sword-finds were discovered in the river Ljubljanica. These examples represent the main portion of the material discussed in this thesis. Besides the swords and messers found in the Ljubljanica, other finds from the river Voglajna, Lahinja, Sava and Mura, as well as the sword from the water tank on Ajdovski gradec and a handful of land-found swords or sword-parts, are covered. Due to the poor quality of contextual information for many swords, discovered in the Ljubljanica, it is very difficult to interpret the reasons behind their original deposition in the water. However, in the absence of other types of medieval weapon-finds from the river, the concentration of swords in certain parts of the riverbed, as well as the relatively peaceful military situation in the high and late middle ages in the geographic area of modern-day Slovenia, many of the sword-finds from the Ljubljanica can potentially be attributed to the intentional or unintentional actions of past individuals.
