Abstract
Uvod: Ortotika in protetika je zdravstvena veda, ki združuje znanja medicine, inženiringa ter znanosti o materialih za zagotavljanje najbolj kakovostne zdravstvene oskrbe pacientov. Ortotiki se ukvarjajo z oblikovanjem, izdelovanjem in nameščanjem ortoz, ki lahko podpirajo, razbremenjujejo ali stabilizirajo del telesa, preprečujejo in odpravljajo deformacije ali izboljšujejo mišično-skeletno funkcijo. Protetiki izdelujejo in nameščajo proteze, ki nadomeščajo izgubljeni ud ali del njega, zaradi bolezni, poškodbe ali deformacije. Namen: Namen diplomskega dela je raziskati in predstaviti programe podiplomskega študija ortotike in protetike na izbranih univerzah v Združenih državah Amerike, opredeliti vpisne pogoje, način in financiranje študija ter izpostaviti pomen nadaljevanja študija po diplomi. Predstavitev zbranih podatkov lahko pripomore k podlagi za oblikovanje programa magistrskega študija ortotike in protetike v Sloveniji. Metode dela: V diplomskem delu je bila uporabljena deskriptivna metoda dela in opravljena primerjalna analiza relevantne domače in tuje literature. Rezultati: V rezultatih smo prikazali različne pogoje za vpis, zahtevane premostitvene izpite, trajanje študija in šolnino za študij ortotike in protetike na podiplomski stopnji na različnih univerzah v Združenih državah Amerike. Razprava in zaključek: V diplomskem delu smo ugotovili, da se lahko na magistrski študij ortotike in protetike v Združenih državah Amerike vpišejo tudi slovenski diplomanti prvostopenjskega študija ortotike in protetike, v kolikor ustrezajo zahtevam izbrane univerze.

Title:Overview of master's degree programmes in orthotics and prosthetics in the United States of America : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Orthotics and prosthetics is a healthcare profession which combines the knowledge of medicine and engineering as well as the technology of materials ensuring the provision of the optimal health care of patients. Orthotists design, manufacture and apply the orthotic devices which support, relieve or stabilize a part of the body, prevent and alleviate deformations or improve the musculo-skeletal functioning. Prosthetists produce and apply the prosthetic devices which replace the lost limb or part of it due to a disease, injury or deformation. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma work is to investigate into the master degree study programmes of Orthotics and prosthetics of selected universities in the United States of America. The aim of the research is to present the enrolment eligibility criteria for domestic and international students, mode of study, tuition and other student fees. Alongside, the significance of formal continuing education is highlighted. The data gathered could provide a basis for the development of the master degree study programme of Orthotics and prosthetics in Slovenia. Methods: For the purpose of the study, a descriptive research method was applied including the review and analysis of the relevant domestic and foreign literature. Results: Findings obtained provide information on the enrolment criteria, the required prerequisite courses, duration of the study and financial aspects of the study in the selected universities. Discussion and conclusion: The diploma work yields information on the possibilities of enrolment of Slovenian first-cycle degree graduates of Orthotics and prosthetics into master degree study programmes in the United States of America. The candidates should meet the necessary requirements and be aware of high study and living expenses. The programmes and curricula presented may serve as a basis for the development of much needed master degree study programme of Orthotics and prosthetics in Slovenia.
