This thesis discusses collection of 22 short stories The Things They Carried, the most known work of the American author Tim O'Brien, veteran of the war in Vietnam, who, in this short story collection mixes biographical and fictious account of what 2.7 million American soldiers were going through in Vietnam.
The first part of the thesis introduces the life and work of the author and because his works can hardly be understood without knowing about the war which he was drafted to, I also introduce a brief introduction into the historical events behind what was going on in the second part of the 20th Century in Vietnam. The main field of interest in this thesis is the absurdity of war, how it reflects in the short story collection and the consequences it leaves on the individual.
