Abstract
Osrednje vprašanje magistrske naloge je vprašanje razmejevanja fikcije od nefikcije v eseju Ivana Cankarja (1876‒1918) »Kako sem postal socialist« (1913) in v eseju afroameriškega avtorja Amirija Barake (1934‒2014) »Black Solidarity« (1984). Da bi lahko razmejili fikcijo od nefikcije v teh dveh esejih, potrebujemo literarno teorijo, ki se imenuje kulturni materializem. Kulturni materializem je literarnoteoretska smer, ki išče sledi razrednega boja v literaturi in le-te kontekstualizira na podlagi dinamike družbene podzidave in nadstavbe. Termin »kulturni materializem« je skoval angleški teoretik in pisatelj Raymond Williams (1921‒1988) leta 1977 v svojem kapitalnem delu Marksizem in literatura (Marxism and Literature, 1977). Za boljše razumevanje teleologije fikcije in nefikcije v dveh esejih uporabljamo poglavje »Raznolikost pisanja« (»The Multitude of Writing«) iz Williamsove Marksizem in literatura.

Title:A cultural-materialist comparison of Ivan Cankar’s essay “How I Became a Socialist” and Amiri Baraka’s essay “Black Solidarity”
Abstract:
The Master's thesis questions the issue of separating fiction from non-fiction in essay "How I Became a Socialist" (1913) by Ivan Cankar (1876‒1918) and "Black Solidarity'' (1984) by African-American author Amiri Baraka (1934‒2014). To separate fiction from non-fiction in the two essays, we rely on the approaches offered by cultural materialism. This approach traces class struggle in literature and contextualizes it based on the dynamic between the base and superstructure. The term "cultural materialism" was coined in 1977 by British theoretician and writer Raymond Williams (1921‒1988) in his capital work Marxism and Literature (1977). To better understand the teleology of fiction and non-fiction elements in the two essays, we use the chapter "The Multitude of Writing '' from Williams' book Marxism and Literature.
