In this final thesis we have decided to expand abilities of programmable logic controller by use of external software. The main reason for using the expansion was that programmable logic controller can not provide the necessary abilities to allow solving of complex algorithms, which are essential for this thesis. We have decribed the complexity of common programming language which is usually used in programmable logic controllers. We have presented the necessary hardware and also the required communication protocol. The principle of external software including the way it works and how to establish it is presented in this thesis. When creating an algorithm which is being used on external software, we have decided to rely on the practical example of parcel sorter in a smart storage unit. In the practical aspect of the thesis we have presented the entire chain of expansions using the physical system of parcel sorter. Experimental part of the thesis shows an example of loading and unloading parcels from the storage unit.
