Abstract

Title:EU Soil Observatory
Abstract:
In 2020, the European Commission approved the European Green Deal with the goal of making Europe climate neutral by the year 2050. Several strategies have been proposed to achieve this goal that envisages changes in the fields of agriculture, climate, environment, energy, transport, and other areas. Soil is an important part of some strategies. Proper soil use and land management can help us achieve these goals, but incorrect handling can make it difficult or even impossible to achieve wanted goals. The thesis presents important strategies of the European Union, which, among other things, also deal with soil. These are the 'Farm to Fork Strategy' and the 'Strategy for Biodiversity'. The largest central reference database on the soil at the level of the European Union (ESDAC), and the largest soil monitoring program implemented in Europe (LUCAS) are presented. The thesis presents the purpose and operation of the newly created European Soil Observatory (EUSO), which will provide researchers and the wider community with simplified data and indicators that will help form new environmental policies to prevent soil and environmental degradation and mitigate climate change.
