Abstract

Title:Geometric optimisation of an axial piston pump casing manufactured from 3D printed PEEK material
Abstract:
With the development of 3D printing and polymers with good mechanical properties, we can develop new and geometrically complex designs to replace steel components. An example is the casing of an axial piston pump, which is geometrically optimised for pumping crude oil at high pressures via a thesis. The optimisation is carried out according to the results of simulations carried out in the Abaqus software. It was found through stepwise optimisation that a PEEK casing cannot withstand the same loads as the steel one, even when all geometrical optimisations are taken into account. By using steel and PEEK together, it is possible to produce components with complex geometries that can withstand high loads and successfully replace steel. The optimised hybrid casing, using a steel jacket and PEEK material, which makes up the entire casing, can withstand a load of around 250 bar, which is close to the maximum requirements, or 300 bar.
