To monitor the output from microprocessor devices, we connect them to a computer, that acts as a terminal with the appropriate software, or to a terminal as a stand-alone unit. The diploma thesis describes the development of a simple character terminal that displays received ASCII characters on a computer display.
The character terminal, as a stand-alone unit, is designed in the VHDL programming language and implemented in an FPGA programmable circuit board, to which a computer monitor is connected via a VGA connector. The terminal displays the received ASCII characters in graphical form on the screen. Some escape sequences and control commands are also implemented, which, in addition to deleting text, allow us to set the text display area and the colour of the text and the background we are writing on. The diploma thesis describes in detail the development and testing of the terminal on the Terasic DE0 Nano and MiniZed development boards.
