Abstract

Title:GIS based assessment of riverine barrier removal in connection to the impact on aquatic organism migrations in Slovenian rivers
Abstract:
The master thesis tackles the abundance of barriers on the Slovenian rivers by creating first coherent barrier database as well as identifying the need for barrier removal in the scope of the influence towards water organisms’ migration. By combining data from multiple sources, we encountered point density which were recognised as duplicates. To eliminate them we applied a methodology which gave us the number of barriers that fragment Slovenian rivers. Furthermore, we identified criteria for measuring the influence towards water organisms’ migration. Criteria were classified into four scenarios and were weighted to suit the means for barrier removal. In the process we applied two methods of ranking – sequential and percent rank. The results are presented cartographically and critically assessed.
