Abstract

Title:Transition from printed to electronic manuals at the company Adria Airways: the impact on learning and knowledge of cabin crew members
Abstract:
The main aim of the diploma seminar is to research the impact of a transition from printed to electronic manuals on ways of learning and level of knowledge of cabin crew members. In the beginning part of the diploma seminar, the structure of Adria Airways training and cabin crew work were presented, along with the manuals’ description, their usage, and the important role they had in staff training. In the second part, the results of a survey among the 69 previous Adria Airways cabin crew employees were presented. The work involved two different surveys; the one that was directed to the staff that were employed at the company before the digital manuals were introduced, and the one where questions were asked to the cabin crew members that were employed after the digitalization of manuals. The results have shown that the Adria Airways employees not only preferred learning from the printed manuals but also found their learning to be more efficient and the knowledge required easier to grasp. Furthermore, the survey has demonstrated that the generation of digital natives also preferred learning from printed media, which was previously already shown by other researches. The biggest negative impact of the introduction of digital manuals could be observed in changes to cabin crew’s motivation to look for new information, engagement to learn, quality of learning, and consistency in training courses on new auditing. However, the survey respondents reported there was no negative effect on their level of knowledge. Interestingly, the results of the survey have shown that a non-digital nature of printed manuals had an impact on the cabin crew’s attitude to manuals. These were more appreciated by the Adria Airways staff members as they gave them a feeling of pride in the work they did and represented an expression of employee loyalty. Therefore, the diploma seminar confirms the findings that other similar studies have implemented; learning from printed media is superior to learning from electronic, digital media as it has a positive impact on knowledge that can be obtained more efficiently and is retained longer. This is an important finding that should be taken into account in various companies and institutions, where learning and knowledge of employees is encouraged and appreciated.
