Abstract

Title:
Ideology and securitization: The case study of the effect of Communist ideology on China's foreign policy : magistrsko delo
Abstract:
The thesis aims to demonstrate the effects of ideology on securitization and foreign policy in general. Traditional security theories are found to be too simplistic and monocausal, they fail to explain the entire dynamics of state behavior. Evocation of ideology will help us better understand state actions as ideology determines goals and ways of achieving these goals by decision makers. One of the ways for ideology to influence security policy is by starting the process of securitization. The thesis assumes that there are two ways for ideology to trigger the process of securitization: the first way is through simple provision of ideas, whereas the second one is in a situation when ideology is a crucial mechanism for state regime to obtain legitimacy. China has been selected as a case to be analyzed because of its ideological heterodoxy and importance. The thesis determines that securitization was present from Mao to Xi, and the intensity of securitization depended on the degree of ideologization by each regime. Foreign relations between China and Australia are then used to ascertain the effects of this ideological securitization on Chinese foreign policy and its relations with liberal democracies, as Australia’s liberalism and proximity to China make it an ideal case for showing how Chinese securitization influences its foreign policy. The thesis shows that this kind of ideological securitization necessitates domestic interference by China in Australia in order for Chinese security concerns to be satisfied.
