Prispevek najprej oriše posebnosti Prešernove poezije znotraj evropske romantike, nato pa ob primerih iz Sonetov nesreče načenja vprašanje njene prevedljivosti v angleščino. Izhaja od posameznosti, torej od opaženih zanimivih mest v različnih prevodih (prevajalci: Paul Selver, Janko Lavrin, Vivian de Sola Pinto, Tom Priestly, Henry Cooper, Toby Garfitt, A. I. Lenarčič in W. K. Mathews), primere razvršča (verz, rima, metafora) ter jih skuša pojasniti.

Abstract

The paper deals with the question of the translatability of Prešeren’s poetry into English. An attempt is made to describe the uniqueness of the poems, then examples from Sonetje nesreče (Sonnets of Unhappiness) are taken as a starting point (translated by Paul Selver, Janko Lavrin, Vivian de Sola Pinto, Tom Priestly, Henry Cooper, Toby Garfitt, A. I. Lenarčič and W. K. Mathews). The paper classifies (meter, rhyme, metaphor) and tries to explain them.
