State aid, when properly awarded, plays an important role in the growth and improvement of the economy and shows positive effects in promoting efficiency and success in businesses. In this master thesis, the granting of state aid, its effects and the way it affects the activity of companies and the economy in Slovenia, Croatia and Poland were studied. The main purpose was to collect and analyse data on granted state aid for selected countries and compare them. The main objective was to find out in which country and in which areas within the countries the most state aid was granted. This research consists of an international comparison and a comparative analysis of state aid based on data collected from each country. The data analysis showed that the state aid granted had both positive and negative effects on the activity of companies. After the economic crisis in 2009, state aid spending increased as states paid more attention to economic activity and businesses. The largest increase in spending was found in Poland, and the smallest in Slovenia. Nevertheless, further analysis and research is needed to thoroughly examine a specific area of state aid and produce results that could further improve the economy and companies' business performance.
