Abstract

Title:
Encouraging literacy and reading culture with boys in primary education
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on boys and their motivation, interest and attitude to reading, reading comprehension and going to the school library. Practise and researches have shown a decline in reading with boys at a certain age. The question how librarians and teachers can help improve boys' literacy has become important. One of the key solutions is implementing reading activities boys enjoy. For the thesis purpose we created reading meetings for a group of boys and tried to find out if and how guided and planned activities can affect their reading accomplishments, reading motivation, comprehension and attitude to the school library. The results were positive. As a result we prepared some books for the boys to read. They came to library more, felt more comfortable and independent.
