Abstract

Title:New forms of radio broadcasting: media convergence in the case of Radio 1 Breakfast Show : diplomsko delo
Abstract:
The diploma thesis addresses the concepts of media convergence and digitalization in the field of radio. The main goal is to determine some of the key implications of media convergence and new media, which have redefined radio's primary values and ways of functioning as a traditional mass medium. The technological development of radio, whose beginnings are rooted in the early years of the previous century, is a key process which illustrates how radio underwent various challenges, developed throughout the whole century in various aspects, and broke through into the digital era. An in-detail review of the evolution of radio in the diploma thesis is conducted through the example of BBC's radio networks, which with a century-old history stand out as important factors in the history of radio. Through a chronological review of BBC's development, and with it also the technological development of radio, I will mark key moments and events that define radio as an exceptional audio-only mass medium. The second part of the diploma thesis is marked by a case study of a special edition of BBC's morning show Radio 1 Breakfast Show which has been part of Radio 1's daily program since 1967. Along with radio the show has developed throughout the years and experienced the digitalization era, which introduced new ways of broadcasting, consumer habits, and media practices. I will discuss the theoretization of key concepts such as interaction and content fragmentation, while also focusing on newer occurrences, such as radio visualization. One of the main conclusions of the diploma thesis is that the phenomenon of media convergence reshaped radio's primary ways of functioning, while the new converged media environment introduced new media, such as the internet, on which radio's existence has become quite dependent.
