Abstract
Metode dela: V diplomskem delu je uporabljena deskriptivna metoda dela z vsebinskim pregledom strokovne in znanstvene literature. Iskanje literature je potekalo v podatkovnih bazah Pubmed, Sciencedirect, Google Scholar, Medline in CINAHL preko portala Digitalne knjižnice Univerze v Ljubljani. Uporabili smo Boolove operatorje: nursing AND postoperative complication AND health education AND prevention. V končno kvalitativno analizo smo vključili 34 enot znanstvene in strokovne literature.

Title:The role of a nurse in preventing endophthalmitis after ophthalmic procedure : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Acute endophthalmitis is the infection of the middle part of the eye, mostly aqueous humour. Oftentimes, the infection develops on the retina, choroid, cornea or all structures inside the eye at the same time. It occurs due to the colonization of pathological bacteria from different foci, mostly after a surgery, penetrative or perforative injury, or it can develop as a metastasis from a distant site of other infections in the body. Appropriate treatment requires immediate action in a matter of hours, otherwise the condition my progress fast and cause anatomical and functional changes of the eye. Thanks to progress in the field of operative techniques and timely detection of complications, the frequency of these infections has decreased significantly. Aim: The aim of this paper is to review professional and scientific literature in order to present treatment of patients with acute endophthalmitis. The goal of the paper is to define the role of nurses after a surgery, focusing on healthcare education of patients about possible postoperative complications. Work methods: In this paper, a descriptive work method was used in combination with a review of professional and scientific literature. The literature was searched in the Pubmed, Sciencedirect, Google Scholar, Medline and CINAHL databases through the Digital Library of the University of Ljubljana portal. It was selected during the period between November 2020 and March 2021, and it comprised articles written in English and not older than 10 years. Advanced literature search was based on previously selected keywords in Slovene, namely pooperativni zaplet, zdravstvena nega, zdravstvena vzgoja, preventiva in znanje, and in English, namely postoperative complication, nursing, health education, prevention and knowledge. The following Boolean operators were used: nursing AND postoperative complication AND health education AND prevention. The final qualitative analysis comprised 34 units of scientific and professional literature. Results: According to the results of the professional and scientific literature review, it is important to give patients meticulous written and verbal instructions. With their professional knowledge, nurses can help patients after an ophthalmologic procedure, provide physical and mental support and prevent and detect complications. In addition, they can empower patients with their consistent and meticulous healthcare elements to be able to detect timely possible complications in their home environment. Discussion and conclusion: It is important for patients to receive all information about the early detection of complications and that information given by nurses is understandable. These findings may act as basis for further development of interventions and activities in the field of ophthalmologic healthcare
