Vrednotenje rešitve za navidezno zasebno omrežje ZeroTier v primerjavi s konkurenčnimi rešitvami

V tem magistrskem delu smo obravnavali najnovejše prostodostopne rešitve VPN. V zadnjem času se je na trgu pojavilo kar nekaj novih rešitev VPN, ki obljubljajo primerljivo ali boljšo hitrost, varnost in enostavno uporabo v primerjavi z uveljavljenimi konvencionalnimi rešitvami VPN. V nalogi smo se osredotočili na delovanje rešitve ZeroTier, ki deluje bistveno drugače kot konvencionalne rešitve VPN, saj uporablja principe SDN. Odjemalci omrežja ZeroTier se avtenticirajo na strežniku ter nato tvorijo tvorijo omrežje P2P. Za evalvacijo protokolov smo načrtovali 4 teste, kjer smo primerjali dve novejši rešitvi, ZeroTier ter WireGuard, z bolj zrelima protokoloma, ki se uporabljata že vrsto let, OpenVPN ter IKEv2/IPSec. Rezultati testiranja so pokazali, da je najprimernejša rešitev primerna za industrijo OpenVPN. Najbolj učinkovit protokol z veliko potenciala pa je WireGuard.

• Title: Evaluation of the ZeroTier virtual private network solution compared to competing solutions

Abstract

In this thesis, we addressed emerging free to use VPN solutions. Lately there are quite some new offerings on VPN market, promising equal or better, performance, security and ease of use in comparison to conventional VPN solutions. We have focused on ZeroTier VPN solution, which works fundamentally different from conventional VPN. It uses SDN principles. Clients of ZeroTier network authenticate on a server, and then form a peer-to-peer network. For evaluation of VPN protocols we have designed a few tests, where we compared two emerging VPN solutions - ZeroTier and Wireguard, and two mature, established protocols - OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec. Results of testing have shown, that the most mature solution for industry is OpenVPN. WireGuard is a very efficient protocol with great potential.
