The main purpose of the thesis is to determine the importance of gamification in education, which historically-themed video games exist, and what impact these games have on the knowledge and interest in history among secondary school students. Gamification is a term that describes the incorporation of game approaches and principles in non-game contexts. Historical video games refer to such video games that start at a certain point in history, contain certain real historical events and take place in real-time and space. The most famous historical video games are: Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Total War, and Age of Empires. Assassin's Creed is a series of historical videogames in which each game depicts several different historical periods and several different settings in which the games take place. Empirical research among high school students has shown that historical video games affect both students' knowledge and interest in history. The use of gamification in education thus encourages students to participate more actively and be more motivated to learn.
