Introduction: Normal and correct development of jaws and teeth requires consistentaction of all orofacial functions (breathing, swallowing, tongue position, chewing and speaking). Deviations in the development of the orofacial area occur when at least one of the orofacial functions is impaired. The treatment of particular jaw orthopaedic abnormalities should start as early as possible in the period of deciduous dentition. Unilateral functional crossbite is one of the most common abnormalities in deciduous dentition and is one of the priorities for immediate jaw orthopaedic treatment. Its signs are not only visible in the oral cavity, but also on the soft facial tissues in the form of facial asymmetry. Often, the unilateral functional crossbite in the period of deciduous dentition occurs because the upper jawis too narrow. There are several different jaw orthopaedic appliances, designed for the rapid expansion of the upper jaw, which have orthopaedic effect on the skeletal parts, and orthodontic effect on the teeth.
Purpose: The purpose of this BA thesis is to present the problem of narrow upper jawand the unilateral functional crossbite, as well as to manufacture a jaw orthopaedic appliance for rapid expansion of the upper jaw using the computer-aided method and compare it with theconventionalmanufacturing of the appliance.
Methods: Methods used in this BA thesis include a review of research literature, description of the manufacturing process of a jaw orthopaedic appliance for the rapid expansion of the upper jaw using the computer-aided and the conventional method, and a comparison of both methods.
Results: The BA thesis describes themanufacturing process of a jaw orthopaedic appliance according to Marco Rosa using the conventional and the computer-aided method. The whole process is also illustrated in figures. Both methods were compared in terms of price, accuracy, and manufacturing time.
Discussion and conclusion: The unilateral functional crossbite is one of the most serious abnormalities in the period of deciduous dentition. However, early treatment of this abnormality is important and can be effective. This BA thesis presents the manufacturing of jaw orthopaedic appliance for the rapid expansion of the upper jawby Marco Rosa. It was made using the conventional and the computer-aided method. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages, yet the majority of appliances in jaw and dental orthopaedics are still made using the conventional method.
