Abstract
This thesis discusses metafiction and adaptation as two distinct and relatively new phenomena. The theoretical part of the thesis analyses metafiction as the first, and adaptation as the second tenet of this thesis; both theoretical parts outline the essence, as well as the most important elements of metafiction and adaptation which will then serve as the bases for the analytical part of the thesis. The analytical part deals with four contemporary American metafictional novels (The World According to Garp, Fight Club, The Hours, and Everything Is Illuminated) and the film adaptations that were produced based on these novels. Each pair, a novel and its film adaptation, are is analysed in terms of the metafictional elements that are present in them, the amount of the metafictional elements from the source text retained in the adaptation, and how these elements are rendered on the big screen. Based on the practical analyses of the four most prominent metafictional novels that have been adapted for film in contemporary American literary history, the thesis aims to establish whether and how the metafictional novel can be successfully adapted on film.

Title:SODOBNA AMERIŠKA METAFIKCIJA IN NJENA ADAPTACIJA NA FILMU
Abstract:
Analitični del naloge obravnava štiri sodobne ameriške metafikcijske romane (Garpov svet, Klub golih pesti, Ure do večnosti, Vse je razsvetljeno) in njihove filmske adaptacije.
