The intercultural character of international relations is very often discussedat both academic and practical political levels. Yet, one can hardly regard the existing research as being systematic. This article explores how the theory and practice of culture intersects with the theory and practice of international relations. The basic questions to be examined in the present article are: how can international relations studies use cultural knowledge; how can cultural studies contribute to reflections on international relations in today's world? For example, how can one address cultural aspects of the contemporary humankind? Can we talk about cultural plurality in the globalisedinternational community; and if the answer were affirmative, what tensions and conflicts may be identified within it?

Abstract

Medkulturni značaj mednarodnih odnosov je pogosta tema razprav tako med akademiki kot tudi na ravni politične prakse. Toda obstoječe raziskave bi le stežka opredelili kot sistematične. Članek raziskuje, kako se teorija in praksa kulture prepletata s teorijo in prakso mednarodnih odnosov. Osnovna vprašanja, ki jih obravnava pričujoči prispevek, so: kako lahko študije mednarodnih odnosov uporabijo znanje o kulturi, kako lahko kulturološke študije prispevajo k refleksiji o mednarodnih odnosih v današnjem svetu? Pa tudi, kako je mogoče obravnavati kulturne vidike sodobnega človeštva in ali lahko govorimo o kulturnem pluralizmu v globalni mednarodni skupnosti; če lahko, kakšne napetosti in konflikte lahko v njej razpoznamo?
