Fundamental theology as a subject has been part of the study programme at the Faculty of Theology in Ljubljana from the very beginning. As theology progressed, the former apologetics discipline gradually transformed into fundamental theology, a subject we know today. The development of the subject strongly depended on the existing magisterium of the Catholic Church. In the early years of the Faculty, fundamental theology topics were harmonised with the teachings of the First Vatican Council. However, the reform of the Second Vatican Council was a major milestone in the development of fundamental theology. The development of fundamental theology topics was also impacted by personalist philosophy, which the post–conciliar lecturers became familiar with during their studies at the Catholic University of Paris. The purpose of this research is to provide a systematic overview of the development of the key fundamental theology topics (revelation, salvation, non–Christian religions) by comparing the textbooks by individual lecturers from different periods. Another goal is to study their approaches to scientific research and trace the influence of time and doctrinal ties to the magisterium.
