Abstract

Title:Optical output unit of fiber laser
Abstract:
The main goal of mechanical polishing of the end surfaces of the optical output units of fiber lasers is to obtain a quality end surface of the optical fiber. The end surface of the optical fiber core must be free of scratches, cracks and impurities, as these defects most often lead to heating of the output output unit and consequently to destruction and instability of the laser system. We prepared three different composites, which were polished using a mechanical polishing device. After the procedure, the composites were examined using a microscope and a digital camera. If the shape of the composite was suitable for measuring with an interometer we have also checked the end surface with it. The obtained results were compared with new and unused industrially polished optical output units. After evaluating the obtained results, we found that some optical output units are of sufficient quality and that the use of these units in the laser system is acceptable. With unacceptable results, it was found that the output optical units still have unwanted irregularities that can lead to damage if used in a laser system. We have shown that this procedure allows us to prepare the final surface of the optical output unit of the fiber laser system. The optical unit is custom made and with any doped optical fiber, which is not possible with industrial solutions. Based on our findings, we made suggestions for further work with the purpose to improve the results in the future.
