Abstract

Title:Bad posture and pain due to the heavy school bags : literature review
Abstract:
Intruduction: A school bag is a gadget used by almost all children and adolescnets who attend school. Use of school bag and its weight can have a great impact on the posture of the body and also can cause pain when overloaded, as it is in use almost all year round. Purpose: Based on the review of specialized and scientific literature, the purpose of this thesis was to ascertain effects of carrying school bags on children's posture. Methods: Search for studies was performed in the PubMed database and the review includes eight studies which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The studies results were divides into two parts. In the first part studies examined association of school bag use with musculoskeletal pain using measurements and questionnaires. In the second part, the researchers measured changes in body posture according to school bag loads. Measurements were performes using cameras and marking points on areas of the body. Discucion and conclusion: Based on the results, we found that the average weight of school bags in most studies exceeded the recommended 10% of body weight. Also, more than half of the participating children had pain by the use of a school bag and changes in the size of the craniovertebral angle, which decreased in all four studies, which cause a change in body posture. These changes are worrying, as the users of school bags are children and adolescnets whose posture is still being formed and that permanent deformations of the muscoloskeletal system can occur wtih the wrong loads.
