Elektrokemijska karakterizacija katalizatorjev pri povečanem masnem transportu

Abstract
Glavna problematika, ki ovira napredek gorivnih celic s protonsko izmenjevalno membrano (PEMFC), je reakcija redukcije kisika (ORR). Preiskovanje katalizatorjev za optimizacijo ORR je zato pomemben del razvoja novih katalizatorjev za PEMFC. Zdajšnje metode preučevanja katalizatorjev za ORR sta tankoplastna rotirajoča diskasta elektroda (TF-RDE) za testiranje majhnih količin katalizatorja pri nizkih tokovih in membransko elektrodni sklop (MEA) za testiranje v realnih pogojih. Žal pri tovrstnih študijah prihaja do pomembnih neskladij. Natančneje, katalizator, ki je kaže dobre lastnosti v TF-RDE, zaradi delovanja pri nizkih tokovnih gostotah (visokih potencialih), ne nujno kaže dobrih lastnosti v MEA. V izogib tem neskladjem se je pred kratkim v literaturi pojavil nov elektrokemijski sistem za študijo ORR katalizatorjev in sicer plinsko difuzijska elektroda (GDE). Ta, vsaj v teoriji, omogoča enostavno rokovanje s celico, pripravo vzorcev zaradi uporabe majhnih količin katalizatorja in hkrati elektrokemijsko karakterizacijo pri visokih tokovnih gostotah MEA. To posledično pomeni hitrejšo in zanesljivejšo karakterizacijo katalizatorjev za ORR. V tej nalogi sem vzpostavil omenjeni GDE sistem, ter izvedel karakterizacijo izbranih katalizatorjev za ORR. Prav tako sem raziskal vpliv razmerja med ionomerom in ogljikom (I/C), ter vpliv nanosa katalizatorja.

Title:Electrochemical characterization of catalysts at high mass transports
Abstract:
The main probem for further progression of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) is the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Studying of catalysts for optimization of ORR is therefore an important part of new catalysts development for PEMFCs. The current methods for studying of ORR are thin film rotating disk electrode (TF-RDE) setups, where small ammounts of catalysts at low current densities are needed, and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for tests under realistic contidions. However, if a catalyst shows good properties in TF-RDE it does not guarantee a good MEA performance. Recently there has been an emergance of a new electrochemical tool, a gas diffusion electrode (GDE), that retains the simplicity and low catalyst amount, and at the same time enables characterization under high current densities. This provides for a faster and more reliable ORR characterization. In this work, I established a novel GDE system and methods for ORR catalysts characterization. Furthermore, I also inspected the effect of ionomer to carbon ratio (I/C), and the influence of catalyst layer loading.
