Shaving is a daily routine for men, which can lead to skin iritation, so it is important to use shaving products. These make hair removal easier and more pleasant and they also moisturize the skin. There are various types of shaving products: soap, cream, foam, gel and shaving oil. Because of their frequent use, safety is very important. It is based on the safety of the ingredients contained in the cosmetic product. The purpose of this Bachelor's degree was to review cosmetic ingredients in men's shaving products and evaluate their safety. We reviewed 114 randomly chosen shaving products available on the Slovenian market. In addition to uncertified, we also included certified cosmetic product in the review. These include 18 soaps, 18 creams, 31 foams, 39 gels and 8 shaving oils. We analysed their ingredients and based on the collected toxicological data, we evaluated the safety of shaving products. We found that there are more uncertified than certified products on the market. The most common are gels and the least common are oils. In reviewing the ingredients, we focused on fragrances, dyes, preservatives, UV filters and surfactants, because they are usually the cause of side effects. The most commonly present fragrance was linalool (52,6 %). The most common among the dyes was brilliant blue FCF (14,9 %) and the most common among the preservatives was phenoxyethanol (18,4 %). In the reviewed products we also found a UV filter benzophenone-4, which is a chemical UV filter. It was present in one of the shaving gels, where it acts as a photoprotective substance. The most commonly present surfactant was Laureth-23, which belongs to nonionic surfactants. This group was the most frequently represented in the reviewed products. When we compared the cosmetic products we figured that most of them consist out of similar ingredients, despite the fact, that we are talking about different groups of cosmetic products. The only exception is shaving oil, which does not have as many ingredients, because of its lipophlic composition. Certified products contained different preservatives and surfactants than uncertified products. However, they contained the same fragrances, except that they were of natural origin. When reviewing the toxicological data of the most frequently present representatives of different groups of ingredients, we found that most are safe for use in the recommended concentrations. The biggest problem can be fragrances, which can cause allergic reactions. Based on our results, we can conclude that shaving products are safe to use. However, there is a chance that some of the ingredients may cause skin irritation or other hypersensitve reactions in small concentrations.
