Abstract

Title:Violence in Contemporary Youth Literature
Abstract:
In my Master Thesis I discuss contemporary youth problem literary works which deal with different forms of violence. My analysis includes three Slovenian and three foreign literary works which address young readers as well as adults. One of the main research questions is how different forms of violence are presented in contemporary youth literature. In my thesis I deal with the question how the literary characters experience violence, how they solve their problems and which ethical questions they encounter. The authors of the analysed literary works expose the problems and consequences of violent acts at the conceptual level and with their narrative express their criticism of the society and the institutions in which violence occurs. Most of the stories are narrated in the first person by the main teenage protagonist. The narrative focuses on adolescent’s coping with the problems and finding the solutions. Some of the characters deal with their problems successfully, the others fail. By some of them the solution is unclear. Most of the endings of the stories do not offer clear-cut answers, encouraging readers to further reflection. The analysed literary works require critical literary reading and empathy with the characters while dealing with their ethical questions.
