Abstract

Title:Cultural specifics of the world in the book Sabriel
Abstract:
Fantasy literature is a popular genre of popular fiction which is still underdeveloped in Slovenia. That is why Slovenian readers encounter it mostly through translations. Translation of fantasy literature is characterised by reproduction of fictional worlds, translation of fictional words, neologisms, archaisms and word play. My thesis focuses on the culturally specific cornerstones of the universe in the novel Sabriel. They are divided into proper and common nouns, and verbs, gerunds, collocations, describing magical procedures as well as special phrases. Proper nouns are additionally divided into aptonyms and usual proper nouns, whereas common nouns are divided into neologisms and ordinary common nouns. Analysis showed that the translator maintained a balance between foreignization and domestication and assured that the translation has the same effect on the target reader as the original has on the initial reader. She mostly translated aptonyms with the occasional equivalent and usual equivalent, while elsewhere she mostly opted for through-translation, functional equivalent and descriptive equivalent.
