The tourism industry has experienced tremendous growth and prosperity in recent decades. Different concepts arose out of the many negative effects caused by this extraordinary growth – sustainable tourism is currently, both theoretically and politically, the most popular concept of development. The concept of sustainable tourism is dynamic, it keeps changing theoretically and practically, while recognizing the many less desirable effects that tourism brings. The key to the examined concept is the perception of it by various stakeholders and the evaluation of the effects caused by tourism on a particular tourist destination. The theoretical part of this master's thesis presents the development and definition of the concept of sustainable tourism, along with all the alternative forms of tourism that have developed in response to the negative effects of tourism. The empirical part presents the results of a survey on the perceptions of the concept of sustainable tourism among the residents of the municipalities of Ljubljana, Bled, and Piran. The effects of tourism perceived by the local population of the examined tourist destinations – Ljubljana, Bled and Piran – are also presented. In conclusion, the interviews reveal the perception of the concept of sustainable tourism and the perception of the effects of tourism in the examined destinations by employees in the tourism industry.
