More and more aspects of our professional and private lives are increasingly moving online because of the rapid development and progress in technology, online tools, and the internet. In today’s world, even children have access to the internet more frequently and at a younger age, and there they are faced with school obligations as well. There are numerous studies and research that focus on researching children’s internet usage. However, little research includes parents and their impact on their children’s internet usage. Parents play a vital role in the safe use of the internet and studies so far demonstrate an empirically proven correlation between parenting style and a child’s use of the internet. In our research, we wished to discover a correlation between internet parenting styles and the internet usage of primary school children aged 9 to 13 and link them with some characteristics of parents. What is more, we have also researched for correlation between internet parenting styles, family communication and parental stress.
The quantitative research involved 100 participants – parents of children aged 9 to 13 years. The majority of parents belonged to the age group between 35 and 44 years, with the average age of their children being 10.88 years. We have tested nine hypotheses with the help of ‘Parental Stress Scale’ questionnaires, ‘Family Problem Solving Communication Index’, and ‘Internet Parental Style’ questionnaire.
We have discovered that most parents use the authoritative internet style of parenting and that their internet usage, age and experience with the internet are statistically significantly associated with the use of the internet by their children. There is a positive correlation between parental control and parental warmth. In regards to the level of control and warmth, parents differ in gender, whereas control and warmth are related to children’s age, the age of their parents, and the assessment of the internet experience of children. There is also a correlation between the extent of parental warmth and the number of children in the family. Family communication is associated with both dimensions of internet parenting style and the level of stress experienced by parents. Based on this, we can also predict family communication.
