Abstract

Title:Hunters of the Forgotten: The Black Lives Matter Movement
Abstract:
The diploma thesis focuses on the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. It answers the questions of what BLM is and how we perceive it from afar. It presents its context: the history of the lives of people of colour in the United States of America from slavery up until the year of 2020, when the movement garnered the biggest amount of support yet. The discourse analysis chapter describes the negative way that right-leaning media views the movement and the positive way that left-leaning media views it. The protesters' testimonies in the fourth chapter illustrate the culture of the movement: the goals of the protesters and the reasons for their participation in the protests. The last chapter displays the entirety of the movement: what it is striving towards, how the BLM movement and the organisation work, and a deeper analysis of the movement's culture, which reveals the values and beliefs that its members have acquired.

Keywords:Ethnology, cultural anthropology, racism, systemic racism, police brutality, social movements, Black Lives Matter, BLM
