Abstract

Title:The Ancient Greeks and Zoroastrianism
Abstract:
Zoroastrianism is a faith, but what kind? How old is it; what are the commandments, if any; are members of the faith still alive today or are they just a thing of the past? These were just a few of the questions I wanted answered, and as a result, I chose this topic as a matter of my dissertation. At first, the title may seem misleading, given that a great deal of attention is paid to the history and content of the religion itself, but as it soon becomes apparent, this was an inevitable necessity for a better understanding of the whole task. In the latter, in addition to the faith's core beliefs and worship, I also briefly presented: the time before the birth of the prophet Zoroaster, the prophet himself, the state of Zoroastrianism today and in the time of the Achaemenid kings of Persia; of course, the religious affiliation of the kings as well, and how religion was perceived by the ancient Greeks. In presenting religion through the eyes of the ancient Greeks, I relied on the testimonies of ancient authors who were familiar with the religion; these testimonies are included in individual paragraphs in the form of quotations.

Keywords:Zoroaster, Zoroastrianism, Greeks, Achaemenid dynasty, Persia, Ahura Mazda.
