We define a family of algebras, called 2-sided zero product determined algebras.As our main result, we prove that this family of algebras, under some conditions,coincides with the well known family of separable algebras. This makes it possiblefor us to characterize finite-dimensional semisimple 2-sided zero product determinedalgebras. To establish the main result, we first develop the theory of both aforemen-tioned families of algebras. In this context, we consider zero product determinedalgebras and characterize separable algebras over fields.
