Climate change presents a threat to our existence and the transition into a low-carbon future a challenge for the international community. It seems that the existing policy framework for the fight against climate change is slowly becoming a reality through the emergence of a social movement which demands action from its political representatives. Meanwhile there exists different realities between the global north and south and the political as well as economic capability for the transition into clean energy. The global south, a region in development, has with the appropriate financing the potential to efficiently transition into a low-carbon future. On its path are of course challenges created by the unequitable world order, international trade system and the existing economic as well as political models. The challenges which the global south faces – to achieve a successful and efficient energy transition – are overcoming dependence on oil production and exportation; insufficient investments and financing of low-carbon technologies; as well as economic development or rather industrialization and the phenomenon of energy poverty with which Africa, and especially this thesis’ case study subject Nigeria, has to deal with.
