Abstract

Title:The Ainu and Japanese popular culture – manga Gōruden Kamui
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study Ainu culture, their customs and language and to compare them to parts of the manga; to search for similarities and differences and figure out the reason why some of the said differences appeared in the manga. It consists of theoretical and empirical part. In the theoretical part the concept of representation is explained, as well as different approaches of representation and the concept of stereotyping. It's followed by the analysis of different Ainu traditions, the description of the manga author and manga summary. It also contains responses to the manga, focusing on two Ainu feedbacks. Empirical part consists of analysed manga parts. It focuses on the differences between the actual Ainu customs and depicted manga parts and presents a few possible findings as to why the differences even occurred. The analysis of the differences concludes that several differences appeared because of the time period the manga is set in, because of alterations to fit the storyline and because of author’s preferences.
