Abstract

Title:USAGE OF HYDROGEN AS AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL IN MARITIME SHIPPING
Abstract:
Fossil fuels, have on one hand enabled a better-connected world, but on the other hand are responsible for emissions of greenhouse gasses. In the maritime sector, which is not the biggest polluter, inferior fuels have been used for years, which are cheaper and contain more harmful particles that are released into the atmosphere during combustion. Increasingly stringent pollution rules will also require fuel changes in the maritime sector, where hydrogen can be the fuel of the future. Currently the use of hydrogen is not economically viable, as production, storage and usage of hydrogen is more expensive compared to fossil fuels. Finally the efficiency of hydrogen with current technology is worse than that of fossil fuels, thus meaning that with higher expenses of production, storage and usage of hydrogen we would get less energy out of it compared to fossil fuels.

Keywords:Hydrogen, sustainability, fossil fuels, fuel cells, renewable sources.
