Abstract

Title:
CRUISE SHIPS IN 21ST CENTURY
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the available systems and norms which are the key part in the construction of new passenger ships. At the beginning, it is described how to act in an emergency and which systems need to stay active after the disaster occurs. There are also new methods of finding the people who are gone missing overboard, which has long been a major problem in this type of tourism due to the large mass of people in a relatively small space. Later, there is a brief talk about the stabilization and ventilation system of the ship, which are decisive for passenger's and crew's pleasant stay on the ship. Keeping the marine environment clean and sustainable is very important, that is why a considerable part of the thesis is dedicated to this topic. Starting with the wastewater treatment plant (mostly from hotel needs) and the working principle of the exhaust gas scrubber, continuing with the modern method of reducing fuel consumption with the help of air lubrication. Another great benefit for the environment is the use of LNG as the alternative to conventional fuels. Later, it is explained how to produce enormous amount of electricity most efficiently and why is generating it different from many aspects compared to the conventional cargo ship. To conclude, there is an example of a modern cruise ship with the description of its features.
