The main focus in this diploma work is the connection of an individual’s personality with a tattoo, which often hides symbolic meanings and reveals a part of a life story. Especially in recent decades, the practice of tattooing is gaining new dimensions, becoming increasingly popular and entering the field of consumer culture. The aim of the research is to determine whether tattooed symbols are a reflection of an individual's personality, what meaning individuals attach to a tattoo, whether it is purely due to aesthetic character, whether it is something deeper and where the need for someone to get a tattoo comes from. We are assisted in this by a research conducted in the form of a semi-structured interview and covering adolescents who have at least one tattoo tattooed on them. The qualitative method gave us a deeper look into the life stories of the interviewees and contributed to new insights in the field of personality. Individuals for the most part attach more importance to content than to aesthetics, which confirms our assumption that humans are symbolic beings who strive for deeper meanings. We also want to maintain our individuality and our difference in the average world, which is evident through the permanent transformation of our external image.
