Abstract

Title:Making a 3D Printed Lithophane
Abstract:
In this diploma thesis, a lithophane has been created with the help of 3D printing. The theoretical part presents a look at 3D printing technology and a more in-depth look at material extrusion technology also known under the term fused deposition modelling. An overview of used materials and methods followed. Methods of 3D capture, relief reproduction and lithophanes are further described at the end of the theoretical part. The whole process of making a lithophane is described in the experimental part. The model of the lithophane was created with 3D modelling software Blender, however the lithophane itself was printed with 3D printer Creality Ender 3 and PLA filament. For the colour reproduction part of the thesis, inkjet and electrophotographic printers were used. In addition, LED and halogen bulb light and their effect on colour were observed. In the results chapter, lithophanes with different printing settings and colour reproduction of them were compared. Moreover, the results show, that the best parameters are a one-millimetre-thick wall and the best layer height our printer could do. The orientation of the lithophane during the print is crucial. The results show that the best orientation is upright. The best colour reproduction has been achieved with an electrophotographic print and acrylic varnish. Backlight research showed that LED is much better suited for the job than a halogen lightbulb. The finished product was satisfactory and could be used as a home decoration or even as an art display, where we would present many coloured lithophanes with different motives on them.
