A wall is an architectural element that defines the interior and the exterior space. Through history the ways to build a wall have changed and transformed and different cultures conceptualized and built walls in unique ways. Today the concept of a wall can be understood not only as an architectural element but as an individual's mental defence system as well.
The central topic of my thesis is focused on the word wall and its different meanings. I have also discussed the historical development of wall building, mainly the different construction methods and different historical roles of walls. The chapter that connects the entire thesis deals with an artistic conceptualization of walls. We have highlighted artists that used the word wall in different forms: physical, symbolic, mental, historical and cultural. They have expanded the meaning of the word wall and have shown additional conceptual problems connected to it.
I have approached the problem of walls through their formation into a physical form. I have photographed the finished works and sorted them in the photography manager programme. I have also changed the environment of the walls as to form a new interdisciplinary problem.
