Abstract

Title:
Construction and design of functional packaging for plants
Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis was to create two types of functional and reusable packaging for bouquets of flowers, made out of a cardboard produced from an invasive and non-native plant called knotweed. In doing so, an environmentally friendly design approach applied and later, a survey was used to obtain information on the opinion and desirability of packaging on the market. According to the results obtained, both types of packaging would be well received on the current market, but the second packaging in the form of a cone attracted more interest. The theoretical part of the thesis presents the concept of packaging and its functions and describes the environmentally friendly design of products, which is the foundation of the circular economy. This part of the thesis also presents the programs that were used, namely EngView Package and Display Designer, with the help of which the packaging was designed and their coats drawn, and Adobe Illustrator, which allowed the creation of the design. Research undertaken on the Slovenian market of materials for wrapping bouquets is presented. The Applause project, which addresses issues related to the management of invasive non-native plants, including knotweed, is also covered and described. Cardboard is made from this kind invasive plant at the Institute of Pulp and Paper in Ljubljana. In the experimental part, the cardboard made out of knotweed was compared with high-gram single-layer cardboard with the help of testing methods, and the packaging, which was presented in the conceptual design together with sketches was then made from it. The result of the thesis are both innovative and ecological packaging for the transfer of flower bouquets, which can also be used as a stand or a floral decoration.
