Abstract
Metode dela: Uporabili smo deskriptivno metodo dela s pregledom strokovne in znanstvene literature.

Title:The importance of proper communication between healthcare professionals and parents of children hospitalized in the intensive care unit : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Pediatric intensive care unit is an unpredictable and stressful environment where seriously ill or injured children are hospitalized and communication with their parents is a long-lasting process. Proper communication of healthcare professionals with parents affects the professional satisfaction and self-confidence of healthcare professionals as well as the satisfaction of parents and the final outcome of the child's treatment. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma work is to investigate which factors of communication parents perceive as negative and to present the foundations of appropriate communication of healthcare professionals with parents of children hospitalized on the pediatric intensive care unit. Methods: We used a descriptive method of work with a review of professional and scientific literature. We searched the scientific literature in Cinahl, Medline, Pubmed and in the DiKUL and Google Scholar web search engines. We also manually searched for literature in libraries of Faculty of health sciences Ljubljana and City Library of Ljubljana. We initially limited the time-required literature to the time period from 2010-2021, but later increased it to the period 1998-2021 due to the relevant literature. A total of 38 units of literature were used, 10 units of literature were used in the results. Results: When talking to healthcare professionals parents want continuous, true, comprehensive and understandable information about their child's condition, treatment and care plans. Healthcare professionals are often in a situation where it is difficult to provide clear information to parents due to the uncertainty of the child's condition. Discussion and conclusion: The results show a strong link between proper communication and parental satisfaction of children hospitalized at pediatric intensive care unit. It is evident from the literature that additional training of healthcare professionals in the field of communication competencies is needed.
