Abstract

Title:Baron Beck
Abstract:
This Bachelor's thesis is about the life of Max Wladimir von Beck. Beck was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1954. With his work his father had gained the right to use the title baron, which Max Wladimir then used. After studying law and serving a year in the army, Beck began working as a draftsman in the tobacco directory. However, shortly after he got a job in the Ministry of Agriculture, where he worked for most of his state official career. He also taught law for some time to the heir apparent Franz Ferdinand, with whom he became friends. This connection helped him become the prime minister in May 1906. In the next two years he introduced universal male suffrage and stopped the tariff crisis with Hungary. When looking at Slovenian newspaper articles it is seen that they saw Beck's work as prime minister in a positive light, even though they were not completely satisfied with all his changes, and in some newspapers with his methods as well. Beck became a member of the House of Lords and during World War I he also became the president of the court of audit. He kept this position later in the Republic of Austria. Between 1919 and 1938 he was the president of Austrian Red Cross. He died in Vienna in 1943.
