Abstract

Title:Resilience of families with children with developmental disabilities
Abstract:
In my master's thesis I researched the resilience of families that have a child with a developmental disabilities or with suspected developmental disabilities. I was interested in finding out whether the age, education of the parents, number of family members, age of the child with a developmental disability, whether the child has a sibling, elapsed time since parents find out the diagnosis or child’s problems, diagnostic status and the type of problems are associated with family resilience. I was also interested if there are statistical differences in family resilience according to sex of parents and child with developmental disability. I was also interested in factors which helped parents to adapt easily to the changes after they found out about child’s diagnosis. I included parents of children with developmental disabilities (clinical sample), who are 1 to 6 years of age and parents of children of the same age who do not have such problems (normative sample). I was interested in statistically significant differences in family resilience between the two groups of parents. I included 68 parents in the clinical sample and 113 parents in the normative sample. I used the Family Resilience Assessment Scale (FRAS; Tucker Sixbey, 2005). The results showed that in a clinical sample, there are statistically significant differences between men and women in the use of social resources and in the overall result of the scale. In the normative sample, the age of child is related to communication in family, the number of family members and number of siblings is related to the spirituality of the family. Statistically significant differences are also in family connection according to type of child’s problems. Other correlations and differences are not statistically significant. The results show that parents of both groups report that their families are resilient and there are no statistically significant differences between groups. This research is first in Slovenia in which I researched the resilience of this families.
