Abstract
V svojem diplomskem delu sem raziskovala vzgojno delo strokovnih in javnih delavcev v dnevnem centru Škofja Loka. Opravila sem štiri intervjuje z zaposlenimi v dnevnem centru, in sicer s strokovno delavko, z javno delavko, strokovno vodjo programa in pripravnico.

Title:Educational Role of Social Workers in Youth Centres: The Importance of Setting Boundaries to Children in Youth Centres
Abstract:
My graduation thesis focuses on the educational role of social workers in the Škofja Loka youth centre. The aim of the study is to investigate how social and other professionals define the setting of boundaries and rules for children in the youth centre and which parenting style they apply. My thesis is based on the assumptions that suitable boundaries have positive effects on young people’s development and that social workers influence upbringing using one of three parenting styles (permissive, authoritarian and authoritative). The study is also based on the assumption that a specific organizational culture has been developed in the youth centre. With its specific beliefs and values, the organizational culture affects the norms and expectations of the majority of people in the youth centre as well as their behaviour. The organizational culture represents the agreements between employees in the youth centre—on what suitable rules are and what discipline is—regarding what children can and cannot do in the youth centre, in order to attain the programme goals. I research the difference between declared values (those that are set out in the youth centre programme) and the actual values (the ones workers are actually achieving within their work). I also focus my research on whether social workers are coordinated and consistent in accepting their educational role, setting the boundaries and in methods they are using when working with children. The study follows a qualitative research design, in which I interviewed four youth centre employees: one social worker, one public worker, one intern and the youth centre leader. The results show that workers in the youth centre recognize and accept their educational role. They most commonly use the authoritative parenting style with some aspects of the permissive style—there is a slight inconsistency with boundary setting and imposing sanctions. It could be concluded that the declared and actual values are not completely the same. The employees also consider the setting of boundaries to be positive for children’s development and for a pleasant atmosphere in the centre. They think that sanctions are important but they are not consistent in imposing them. They are coordinated in their perception of their educational role and slightly less so in the methods they choose when working with children.
