Abstract

Title:Comparison of two methods for determining multi-elemental composition of particulate matter in air: XRF and ICP-QQQ
Abstract:
There a high number of solid particles in the air that can negatively affect human health. Particles can come from a variety of sources, most commonly from vehicle exhausts and by burning wood as a heating source. All these particles, which are located in the atmosphere, have a characteristic elemental composition, which, however, depends on the origin. Therefore, the aim of the diploma thesis was to determine the multi-element composition of the particles captured at one location. The measurements were performed at different times of the year. Therefore we were able to determine the concentration of particles depended on the time of year. We used a sampler which pumped air onto the inserted filters. During pumping, air particles were deposited on the filter and captured by the sampler. Multielemental analyses were done by using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-QQQ). All of the filters were also analyzed by measuring X-ray fluorescence (XRF), which allowed the results of both analyzes to be compared. I determined the source of contamination based on the environmental assessment in which the sampler was located.
