This contribution offers some thoughts on Valvasor and the future. Starting from some well-known biographical aspects, from available documents - especially his key work The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola - and what these reveal about Valvasor himself, the author seeks to make clear the natural historian and polymath's attitude towards his own future and that of his beloved homeland. The result is a personal portrait that - although profoundly interested in the past and spiritedly involved in the present - shows how all his personal choices, those concerning his private life and also those concerning his research and studies, were always informed by attention to the future. The contribution concludes with quotations from his work which can help provide ensuing generations with a starting point for reflection on our own future.
