Drago Jančar is one of the most prolific and translated contemporary Slovene writers. He is a prosaist, an author of short stories and novels, a playwright and a multiple award-winning essayist. His essays have always dealt with topical questions about the historical role of Slovenes in the former Yugoslavia, in the context of Central Europe, at the time of Slovene independence and of entering the European Union. Jančar's words have always attracted a great deal of attention and triggered polemical responses.
